A Brief Introduction to Us

The Green Projects of SMK (P) Sri Aman has been given more focus ever since our ex-headmistress, Puan Alainal Hasani first took charge of our school. Since then, these Green Projects have grown in number and broadened in scale. Puan Alainal gave her full support and cooperation to the school, on top of suggesting many helpful tips and ideas on making SMK (P) Sri Aman one of Malaysia’s Green Schools to the teachers and students in chare of carrying out Green Projects.

The Environment Team was then established to carry out activities that help the environment in various aspects. The Environment Team of SMK (P) Sri Aman is now known as the Toyota Eco Rangers Club, ever since Sri Aman managed emerge champion of the Toyota Eco Rangers competition in 2009.

The projects carried out in Sri Aman include the Solar Project, Rain Water Harvesting, Compost, Bio Enzyme, Recycling, planting forest trees, endangered species of trees and fruits, and herbs.

The Sri Aman Eco Music Band was also recently established. Sri Aman is currently developing green technology innovation projects in the school. The biggest Green Project that has been carried out by SMK(P) Sri Aman is the Solar Project (MBPIV), which has made Sri Aman the first school in Malaysia to own a solar panel.

Two Rainwater Harvesting tanks have been placed around the school compound and the rainwater that has been filtered by harvesting system will be used to clean school toilets. It can also be used by students to wash their hands or clean their classes.

The composting project involves the making or organic fertilizers by teachers and students. Compost that has been made will be packaged and sold to Sri Amanians and residents of the residential areas surrounding the school.

Bio Enzyme is produced monthly by members of the Toyota Eco Rangers club and sold to garner profits. The school is also actively involved in recycling projects. Numerous interesting activities have been carried out under our recycling projects, such as a recycling workshop, as well as making handicrafts out of old newspapers.

The main projects of the Toyota Eco Rangers Club in 2010 were tree-planting and innovation projects. About 120 forest trees, herbs, as well as fruit trees were planted around the school compound. The task of taking care of these plants was undertaken by students of SMK (P) Sri Aman who use compost and bio-enzyme as fertilizers.

The Eco Music Band is the pride and joy of SMK (P) Sri Aman as the band is the first band in the history of the school to use instruments made out of recyclable items. Although it has only been a month since the band was conceived, the Eco Music Band has already received numerous invitations to perform in events, such as the closing ceremony of 2010’s Anugerah Hijau.

In 2010, SMK(P) Sri Aman has successfully come up with two new green innovations which include the ‘Ember Window Cleaner’ and the ‘Sri Aman Composter’. The Eco Carnival and International Conference that was held on the 11th of November, 2010 was a massive success many students and members of society attended.

The school hopes that SMK(P) Sri Aman would keep up their efforts to raise awareness on the importance of conserving and preserving the environment  amongst students and members of society. The school also hopes that in 2011, Sri Aman would clinch the coveted title of ‘Green School’ and aid our nation in gaining international recognition in the field of Green Projects which also happens one of our school’s niche areas.

In September 2009, we decided to recruit the Form 1 students to join our club. Each senior member was assigned to recruit a junior member. Training sessions were held and the juniors were asked to learn up the jobs of their seniors. However, there were only a handful number of juniors who were truly dedicated towards the club. Therefore, after the training period of a month, 3 out of the 10 juniors were elected to join the club. The members who were elected are:

- Alya Zulaikha
- Alya Suaidah
- Noor Cynta Camelia

The new year brings with it a massive influx of new members, which is something we have been looking forward to for ages, as the biggest obstacle that lies in our paths when it comes to getting certain things done is lack of manpower. We finally had 60 over members in our club!
A junior board of directors was appointed to step into the shoes of the senior board of directors consisting mainly of Form 3 students as greatest fear of the year-PMR is right around the corner to prevent them from blaming any lack of A's on Eco Ranger

In February 2010, the 'Ecopoints' system was introduced due to the disappointing attendance for the meetings and to motivate the members to start being more committed to the club. The Eco points system works like a merit/demerit system. Merit points are called Eco points while demerit points are called Waste Points. Members who have collected 10 waste points or more wouldn't get any marks for 'penglibatan' when their co-curricular marks are given while those who have collected above 20 Waste Points wouldn't get any marks for 'pencapaian' on top of 'penglibatan'. Those who did not attend meetings for more than 3 times without reason were asked to leave the club.

Another system introduced was the TER passport system. Every member were given a tiny notebook which would have two columns on every page. Whenever any member attends an Eco Ranger related event or activity, she could request for a signature from either the teacher adivisor, the president or the vice president. The member who has collected the highest amount of signatures would be crowned 'Best Club Member' when this program ends sometime around June next year. However, this system was not executed as planned.

Members who have joined more than other clubs on top of Toyota Eco Rangers had to choose between their other clubs and this one. This decision was made as we did not want the members to neglect the club activities and not attend meetings. We lost about 10 of our old members due to this new rule.

In the month of May, Pn.Yeo, as our teacher advisor had decided to personally handpick 15 members who would make up the 'competition team'. The main idea of her doing so was to maintain the quality of work for the competition. The competition team elected would be in charge of everything that has to do with this competition, be it judging, going for an exhibition, or even documentation. There would be no leader for this team, each of the 15 members would have their respective duties to carry out, and they would each have to give a progress report on what they have been up to in the past week.

As for the rest of the members, they had an AGM once again, whereby they elected an entirely new board of directors. The club will function as a platform to discover talented and potential leaders to be the future members of the competition team.

The competition team organization that was formed in May 2010 was not effective as the team did not have a leader and the members were not driven to carry out their respective jobs. Therefore, a small meeting was held in October 2010 and a new board was elected. The new board of directors consists of 3 main leaders and there will be sub-heads working under them. Via the new organization, the jobs would be carried out more systematically.

A Greeting From Our Project Manager

Hello! I’m Farhanah and I’m the project manager for the Toyota Eco Ranger club of SMK (P) Sri Aman. I’m the person who plans how the organization of the club works, on top of making sure that everyone does their work. I also act as a go-between for the members and the teachers. Besides that, I will think of new ways on improving the club, thus aiding the environment.

This blog will tell you everything there is to know about our club and the environment. Our mission is to take the first step towards saving the environment as well as give ideas and suggestions on how to go about doing it to the community. The blog has numerous sections to be read, including our club activities, facts about plants that we have planted and even articles on the latest environmental issues, tips, and developments.

I personally hope that our club can make the world a better place and also succeed in educating people around the world to save the earth. Please do contact us if there are any suggestions you would like to make or question that you would like to ask. That’s all for now, and may we all save the earth, one plant at a time.

Thank You.
Sincerely,
Nur Farhanah Adam Malik,
Project Manager.

Greetings from the Head of Documentation

Hi! I’m Atikah and I’m the Head of Documentation. I’m the person in charge of writing letters, proposals, sponsorship appeals on top of taking attendance during meetings. There are a few other heads under me who are in charge of their respective segments. There are:

·       Head of Presentation & Inventory : Chong Soo Sun
·       Head of Video Presentation &  Inventory : Nur Syafiqah

Angela is in charge of our club’s blog while Eishatur makes sure that all the minutes are typed, printed and filed. Ili closes the accounts every month and makes sure that it is balanced. She also makes our Facebook page as active as possible. Photos of events will be taken by Elsa before she uploads them to the online scrapbook.

Niraanjana handles everything to do with design, from designing the bottle wrapper of our bio enzyme to making flyers for our club to promote any upcoming events or campaigns. Soo Sun is in charge of making any Powerpoint presentation our club requires for a campaign or a judging. Last but not least, Syafiqah is in charge of making videos for our club to be shown during the launch of a campaign or event.

Every one of them updates their work weekly and constantly makes sure everything they are in charge of is in tip top condition. I will guide them through the tasks they are assigned, with the help of the project manager, Nur Farhanah. I will then check their work to see if they completed their tasks by the deadlines specified, and ensure that the club’s documentation is of good, consistent quality.

I think that’s all there is to say about the documentation team. Until next time!

Sincerely,
Atikah Abd Rahman,
Head of Documentation.
