Performers and participants of this competition were treated to a scrumptious breakfast after registering their arrival. Participants then drew lots to determine when each team would present their respective projects. This year's Anugerah Hijau competition consisted of two categories, namely 'Totally Active Robot' and 'Wildly Creative Mural'. All teams from our school took part in the 'Totally Active Robot Category', which was also a category which drew large numbers of participants.
Our school's Green Rangers team was the first to present their project, the 'Octobot' in front of the judges. The Octobot, staying true to its namesake, had eight tentacles with a clip attached at its end which could be used to hold gardening tools. Water can also be filtered through the head of the Octobot, and the filtered water will flow out of a tap attached at the Ocotobot's body.
The next team from our school to present their project in front of the judges was none other than the 'Water Transformers', which came up with a male robot functioning as an art station, an art station with a very useful function. The chemicals and substances contained in the paint we primarily use for out art projects are very harmful to the environment, which was why the Water Transformers decided to equip their robot with a filter which could filter the paint particles from used water, before the water is discharged through the robot's mouth to be reused. The filtered water was tested to have a safe pH value, which is why it can be reused for many purposes. The robot is also equipped with a fan, which could be used to dry art projects. The robot's hands can be used to hold art supplies. The Water Transformers also held a campaign in One Utama, attempting to raise funds for the WWF on top of spreading awareness to the general public on the importance of saving endangered aquatic wildlife, such as turtles.
The final team from our school to present their project came up with the Ecobot, an aesthetically pleasing robot which can be used as a landmark of our school. The Ecobot was also designed to attract younger children. The Ecobot has environmental tips enclosed within its face, which can be switched everyday. The Ecobot also contains a rubbish bin within its' body, and will emit a 'beep' sound once the rubbish bin is full, so that the people in charge would know when to empty the rubbish bin, preventing it from overflowing.
After every group presented their respective projects, everyone present was given a five-minute break while the judges totaled their scores and decided who the winners were. To ease the tension in the room, our Eco Music Band was then asked to perform for 15 minutes before the winners were announced.
Finally, the long-awaited results were announced. The winning team of the 'Totally Active Category' was from SMK Rantau Panjang, who came up with a robot with a sensor built within its swiveling head made out of a broken radio. The robot with an adorable design can be placed on pedestrian walks, and when the built-in sensor detects rubbish on the floor, it will emit a sound to alert the litterer to the fact that his crime did not go undetected, leaving the litterer with no choice but to dispose of his trash properly. It is indeed, an innovative idea.
SMK Bukit Jelutung emerged winners of the 'Wildly Creative Mural' category, with a mural painted on a board sponsored by parents of students attending SMK Bukit Jelutong. The beautiful mural was one that was carefully planned and created, using the stenciling method. Each and every aspect of their mural held a meaning, which made their mural meaningful on top of being aesthetically pleasing. With such a winning combination, their win didn't come as a surprise at all.
SMK (P) Sri Aman's Water Transformers managed to do our school proud by winning the 'Special Prize by MPC'. It was truly an interesting day, one that allowed many of us to gain a lot of invaluable knowledge.
